How to Choose the Right Instrumental Beats for Your Songs?

Choosing the right instrumental beat to make songs is often a long-term job when you are an artist. In labels and record companies, there are people who get paid to sort out instrumental beats. In the music industry, we call it A&R. (Acronym for Artists and repertoire)

These people are there to find the right beats that will fit best with the artists they produce.

Unfortunately, not everyone can do this kind of job. It is for this reason that I am writing this article to you. I'll help you choose the right instrumentals to make your songs! Let's go!

Styles of instrumental beats

There are 3 main styles of instrumental beats. Beats that are made with "gimmicks" or "riffs". Those with just looking chords (progression chords) And those with a mixture of the 2.

Let's see together the difference of each of them.

1 - Instrumentals made with gimmicks

We find this kind of beats especially in urban music, so Hip Hop, R&B and also in pop. Note that nowadays, these kinds of styles tend to mix.

What exactly is a gimmick?

A gimmick is a series of notes, which create a kind of melody and which will be repeated throughout the instrumental.

For example in the song Stay by The Kid La Roi with Justin Bieber. You can listen to it below:

When producers send this kind of instrumental to A&R in labels. They are often refused because it is often difficult to sing over them. The melody or gimmick of the instrumental may conflict with the sung melody (topline).

The only solution is to sing almost the same melody as the one made on the beats.

In the example of the song Stay, we notice that Justin Bieber sings practically the same melody as the one made on the synth.

Another good example would be the song Lil Nas X - Industry Baby. Lil sings practically the same melody as the brass does in the hip hop beat:

List of famous songs using only gimmicks in the instrumental:

24kGoldn - “Mood”

Panic at the Disco - “High Hopes”

Katy Perry - “ET”

Jason Derulo - “Acapulco”

Justin Bieber - “Intentions”

2 - Instrumentals with chords

We find this kind of instrumental in 70% of the songs and that since the beginning of the music. They are made with one or more chord progressions that loop throughout the song. (with a guitar or piano for exemple)

They are not really liked by amateur artists. Why ? Because it is difficult to create a topline (melody) on top when you have little experience.

A good example would be the instrumental of the title "abcdefu" by singer GAYLE. Take 1 minute to listen to the first verse and chorus :

A bit boring, no? It's normal ! Not all professional instrumentals are fun to listen to without vocals. They are often made after the song has been written and composed on guitar or piano, for example.

In Gayle's example, the first version of the song was rock. Then a hip-hop rock version was made afterwards and it was this version that was successful.

It's not uncommon for major producers to make twenty different versions of a song. In order to have the version that will work best.

Instrumental I made just with chords:

Example of famous songs using only chords in the instrumental:

Adele - “Easy on me”

Maroon 5 - “Sugar”

BTS - “Dynamite”

Billie Eilish - “everything i wanted”

Ed Sheeran - “Perfect”

Note: if you want to have this kind of instrumental, it would be better to have already done your song on guitar or piano. This will allow a producer to make you a custom instrumental.

3 - Instrumentals with chords and gimmicks

We find this kind of instrumental in more and more songs. The influence of gimmicks comes partly from Europe with electronic music.

It is often the favorite choice of artists who buy pop beats on the internet. Because they are less boring to listen to and get a lot more views on YouTube.

A good example would be Lady Gaga's song Poker Face.

We can hear the synth gimmick and the chord progression in the chorus :

Instrumental I made just with chords & Gimmicks:

Example of famous songs using chords & gimmicks in the instrumental:

The Weeknd - “Bleeding Light”

Ava Max - “My Head & My Heart”

Avicii- “Wake me up”

David Guetta - “Memories”

The Chainsmokers - “Takeaway”

Now that we have seen the 3 styles of instrumental beats, which should we choose?

If you are not a rapper, it is not recommended to take the instrumental with just gimmicks. You will be limited for the topline because you will be forced to follow the melody previously created by the producer.

Instrumentals with just chords are great if you're good at it and can create toplines easily.

On the other hand, you have to take the time to look for them well because they are rare… They sell less well as a result, composers make them less often.

The ideal would be to ask a producer to make them tailor-made for your topline.

The best choice if you're not a pro would be the instrumentals with the mix of gimmicks and chords.

At mavrickpopbeats, we often made them! You can view our catalog here. You will surely find what you need!

A good tip would also be to take the time to listen to the instrumentals of your favorite songs. That will train your ear to choose the right instrumental beat for your songs.

The artistic direction

Finally, let's talk about artistic direction, it's an often foreign concept for unsigned artists. Yet if you don't do it right, you can miss out on your future music career.

To put it simply, you must choose a musical identity and not change it again. If you sing on instrumental dance and 2 months later on hip hop, your identity will not be clear.

Choose the instrumentals that go with your style. If you made dance music, take some dance beats. If you are doing an urban style, stick to that style too.

Only very famous artists can afford to change their style as they wish. Thanks to their large fan base, they can do whatever they want!

And don't fall into the trap of absolutely wanting the latest trends. By the time your song is done and it starts to make itself known, the style of the moment will have already passed!

You now have all the keys in hand to choose the right instrumental for your songs.

Good luck !

How to Sell My Music on iTunes

As a musician, you want to get your music out to the world so that it can be heard by the masses. One great way to do just that is to sell your music on iTunes. Unfortunately, selling your music on one of the largest online audio and video retailers can be difficult it you do not know the right steps to take and what hurdles you must overcome.

Publishing Music without an Aggregator

It can be very hard to publish your music on iTunes without hiring an outside company, known as an aggregator. These professionals work with Apple, convert your songs into the correct format, and take care of all legal issues when it comes to publishing your music online. If you attempt to sell your music on iTunes without the assistance of an aggregator, it is still possible to do so as long as you meet the following conditions.

You will need to have recorded at least 20 albums.

You have to buy a UPC or Universal Product Code as well as an International Standard Recording Code for each track.

You will need access to a Mac that is running the OS X 10.5.8 or later.

Choose from a List of Apple-Approved Aggregators

If you do not meet the above qualifications and choose to go the route of hiring an aggregator, you will want to go with a professional who has been approved by the Apple Corporation. There are hundreds of music distribution companies out there who claim that they can help you sell your music on iTunes, but you will get the best results if you choose to only work with those which have already been approved by Apple.

Some of the most popular Apple-friendly aggregators include Tunecore, CDBaby and Catapult. You can also find a number of other reliable aggregators that work with iTunes who may not be currently on Apple’s list such as Ditto, ReverbNation, ADED. US Music Distribution and RecordUnion just to name a few.

Consider the Price of Working with an Aggregator

An aggregator has to make their own money somehow so you can expect to pay out a fee for each track or album that you produce. Many will display their prices on their company websites. You can expect them to either charge you a flat rate fee or take a cut from your royalties, or both. Examples of upfront costs for aggregators are listed below.

Individual songs: $10 to $15 per song

Albums: $20 to $60 per album during the first year

Keep in mind that some companies will change artists an annual fee to keep your album on iTunes. This will typically cost anywhere from $40 to $50 annually.

Understand the Terms of Working with an Aggregator

When you work with an outside source to sell your music, you will need to prepare yourself to pay out fees. Your aggregator will take a percentage of sales and on top of that, Apple currently takes 30% of the revenue from each song that is sold on iTunes. This means that you may make an average of $0.70 per song, before your aggregator takes out their own fees.

It is a good idea to understand how an aggregator pays you and all the terms that go along with this process. An aggregator is a music distribution service. That means they publish your music on outlets such as iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud and dozens of other music services. For doing this, the aggregator is paid for each of your songs that are sold. They then send you a check for your share of the profits. Some aggregators pay on a monthly basis while others may pay weekly or bi-weekly. You can get more information by looking into different aggregator’s royalty reports to gain a better understanding of when you will get paid.

Compare the Benefits of Each Company to find the Right One for You

Some companies will have low up-front fees and take a larger cut from your sales while others will charge you more up front and take less from each song purchase. It’s best to weigh the pros and cons of each company and find out which will provide you with the best profits and benefits in the long run before you make a final commitment.

Some aggregators may charge you an extra fee to put your music on a particular website, while others will charge you a flat rate for each album regardless of whether you put your music on iTunes, Spotify or any other online music retailer. It is a good idea to learn more about how the aggregator pays for pre-order options and if they will send you a statistics report that lets you see how your album or track is trending each day.

Choose the Aggregator that Fits Your Band’s Needs

here are many options out there for bands and musicians who are eager to get their music out to the public. One of the biggest decisions that you will have to make as a musician when it comes to putting your music online to sell is whether you want to pay an annual fee to your aggregator or allow them to take a percentage of your royalties. There are benefits and disadvantages to both situations. It is best to stop and think about which situation best suits your own personal needs or the needs of your band members. It is recommended that all new artists avoid annual fees because they are more likely to make a higher profit by paying out a cut of their royalties when first starting out in the business.

Upload Your Music and Album Artwork

Once you have hired the best aggregator for the job, it is time to upload your music and album artwork, send the files to the company and let them handle the rest of the work from that point forward. Typically it will take anywhere from one to four weeks to get your music up on iTunes. Be sure to send your aggregator the best quality sound files and high quality image files so that they can easily convert them to the correct format for iTunes. Some sites even offer custom album artwork if you do not have any at the time.

Some final thoughts to keep in mind, it is a good idea to wait 2 to 3 weeks to release your music to the public. The albums that are often featured on iTunes’ “New and Noteworthy” list are chosen by the iTunes staff members. Setting your release date for your album 2 or 3 weeks after you have distributed your music will give the iTunes staff members plenty of time to listen to your songs and possibly place them on the front page of the website.

© Copyright - All rights reserved - Any reproduction or duplication prohibited.

How to Write a Good Song ? – 10 Tips

Coming up with good song material can be complicated no matter how much experience you may have. Fortunately there are many tips and tricks out there for avid songwriters who want to do whatever they can to create a hit tune. There are songs that can strike up an old memory and make a moment seem more pleasant. There are also songs out there that are so catchy that many of us can’t seem to get them out of our heads. No matter what type of song you are aiming to write, the following tips are sure to help you get started in the right direction.

1. Pay Attention to Song Structure

A song does not have to follow a specific sequence in order to be a hit, but in today’s music the most popular songs tend to follow some form of structure. Whether it is ABABCB (A for the verse, B for the chorus and C for the solo or the bridge) or AABA (which would be two verses, followed by a bridge and another verse) either of these structures are sure to help you put together a catchy tune.

2. Lyrics are Always Important

The lyrics can be the most memorable part of the song and you want to put words in there that are both catchy and easy to remember as well as meaningful. If your intentions are to create a fun song that doesn’t have much sentimental value, you can always go with a smaller amount of words and repeat portions that stand out to you the most.

3. Don’t Skimp on the Production Quality

If you are the person that is in charge of producing the song, keep in mind that it’s very unlikely that you will have a major hit on your hands if the recording quality of the track is very poor. A high quality recording is what you want in order to get your music out to a broad market so that it can be heard by the masses. So if you feel that you have the right lyrics and chords you may want to pay out some extra funds in order to make sure the see track is done right.

4. Gather Techniques from the Masters

If you are feeling uninspired then listen to some of the great ones and take notes on how they have put together some of the most memorable songs of our time. Don’t limit yourself to one type of songwriter either, take the time to enjoy the writing of the Beatles’ Paul McCartney while also enjoying today’s chart-topping songwriters such as Adele or Taylor Swift.

5. Stop Thinking and Start Writing

If it is your dream to become a famous songwriter then you need to stop thinking about it and start getting to work on your craft. Commit to writing one verse or even one line each day and see where that takes you. You may be surprised at where you end up once you get started writing just a few lines down on a piece of paper.

You are singer ? Songwriter ? Download 10 Free Pop instrumental Beats. Credits: Sony ATV, Universal Music, MTV, VH1..

6. Listen to all different types of Music

Musicians and songwriters today are not just inspired by one type of music and many grew up listening to a melting pot of different sounds so in order to compete with that you will need to listen to all different genres from country to pop and everything in between. You may get inspired by listening to a song that you never thought you’d ever find yourself listening to.

7. Inspiration can Strike at Any Moment

Always carry around a notepad and pen with you so that you will be able to write down quick notes any time that you get inspired. We have all heard those great stories about legendary songs being written down first on old restaurant napkins and scraps of paper. Keeping a notebook will also help you to keep your songwriting attempts organized.

8. Find the Hook

The hook is the part of the song that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. Once you have managed to find the right hook for your song your work is practically finished. Hooks are usually located within the chorus of the song and tend to end up becoming the title of the song. If it manages to stick in your brain and you can’t get it out of your head, you have found your hook.

9. Try to Rhyme as Much as Possible

While songs do not always have to rhyme, most of the best songs out there do. It may help to purchase a rhyming dictionary to provide you with inspiration whenever you are stuck. Rhyming can also help to make the lyrics flow easier which can make the song memorable and easier to listen to.

10. Learn the Chords

If you usually write using a keyboard, try a different approach and pick up a guitar to write with instead. You may be able to take your songwriting in a completely different direction by doing so. And if you do not know how to play the guitar, at least learn the chords or maybe even invest in some basic lessons to help you with your craft.

Great songwriting doesn’t have to be difficult. It really all comes down to a science. You want to create something that listeners will remember and cherish for many years to come. Whether the song needs to be an addictive hit that turns into a famous earworm or a legendary track that will capture the heart of couples on the dance floor, by following these steps you should be able to come up with a song or two that will do just that.

6 Songwriting Tips For Inspire Creativity

The role of a songwriter can be both a blessing and a curse. While it may fill our hearts with joy to compose a song that is filled with sentiment and life experiences, the process can also be emotionally draining. You may fear that the song will not turn out the way you want it to or you will never be able to fully express your feeling through the lyrics on the page. Inspiration for new songs may be everywhere we look but we can’t always depend on the motivation to be there each and every time we are inspired. In order to make the most out of your song writing skills, here are a few helpful tips that will inspire creativity and help you get motivated when it matters most.

1. Do not dispose of unfinished work

One of the hardest things when it comes to any type of writing is starting a project from scratch. You may have many ideas in your head but choosing the right starting point can be a struggle. If you keep your unfinished song lyrics and random quotes or lines in an organized file, you will have a possible starting point that you can turn to when you find yourself in a rut. So keep all of those one line lyrics or choruses that you have jotted down on napkins and scrap paper and perhaps they may all come together to provide you with an award-winning song.

2. Two Heads are better than one

There is hardly anything that will motivate you to do your job more than having someone else depending on you for your share of the work. Having a co-writer to help you with your songs will give you that extra push that you need to get to writing something new each day. Another writer can also help you come up with new ideas, lyrics and twists that you may have never thought of on your own. By putting together both of your talents, you and your writing partner may be able to come up with a better song than you would have on your own. And even if you do not come up with a number one hit, the comradery and companionship that comes along with having a co-writer can be a rewarding experience all on its own.

3. Choose a place inside your home to write

It may seem like a very simple concept, but by choosing one single place in your home to write your music and only going to that place when you have an idea, you will be able to focus more on the task at hand. So sit aside a small desk or chair in the corner of your bedroom, or go to the kitchen table in the middle of the night when everyone else is sound asleep. You will find that if you have that one familiar spot that is easily accessible to you, your motivation and creativity levels will be on the rise.

4. Do not Dedicate All Your Time to Writing

We have all heard the saying about all work and no play. And even if song writing is your passion in life, you can have too much of a good thing. Make it a point to set aside a certain amount of time each day to dedicate to song writing. Once that time is up, concentrate on other things that you enjoy. This will not only help you stay focused on the task at hand when the time comes for you to write, but it will also allow you to get out of the house and find more inspiration for your songs. Choose to set aside anywhere from five minutes to thirty minutes to concentrate on writing. This can be extremely helpful on days when writer’s block is at its worst and you are struggling to find inspiration. If the motivation is just not there, save it for the next day and take some time to clear your mind.

5. Assign Yourself a Writing Project

Sometimes you may have so many songwriting ideas in your head that it can be difficult to make sense of it all and settle on one single track. When that happens, it may be easier to come up with some rules and guidelines for yourself to go by. Consider writing a song based on a topic that you have never dreamed of writing about in the past or maybe go with a music genre that is completely different from what you have worked on before. Doing so could provide you with brand new ideas and concepts that you didn’t even know you were capable of coming up with.

6. Choose a Time of Day to write that is best for you

Routines can be a good thing even when it comes to creative writing. If you set aside a time of day to write, such as 10pm at night, then you will be more likely to sit down and dedicate that time to writing than if you do not plan ahead at all. Studies show that it takes a few weeks of doing something consistently in order to form a habit. By setting aside an hour or thirty minutes to write each day and sticking to it, you could end up with a full library of amazing songs in no time that are just waiting to be recorded.

The trick behind being a good songwriter is to work at it every single day. You have a talent that you want to share with the world and the only way that you can achieve that goal is to put the words that are in your heart onto paper to form lyrics that will hopefully inspire music lovers all over the world.

How To Become a Famous Singer ?

Everyday people turn on their radio, phone or computer and listen to the latest pop song. As they smile and enjoy the sound of the lovely music, they wonder to themselves about how to become a star.
People envy the fame, beauty and wealth that these pop stars all seem to possess and want to become more like them. While it is certainly a difficult task, the world is always looking for a new pop star!
Here are a few steps to help you on your journey:

Be Genuine and Respectful

Although many people look at celebrities and think that their lives are in disorder, that’s not always true. Most celebrities who top the charts for years, especially pop stars, are down-to-earth, genuine people. In fact, it is this appeal to be like the boy or girl next door that gets them legions of fans.
Think about someone like Justin Timberlake. He has consistently been one of the most beloved pop stars for nearly two decades. A big reason for this is that he doesn’t use vulgar language or over the top sexual content. Sure, he’s handsome and stylish, but nothing that would have parents stop their kids from listening to his music.

Develop Your Sound and Voice

Many of us would like to be world-famous pop stars. Yet what makes most people dreamers and not world-class singers is their voice.
Sure, not all famous pop stars have amazing voices, but most of them are certainly talented. And if they don’t have a great voice they’re making up or it in other areas like their style and swagger.
To start, assess your current voice and singing experience. Do you have any experience singing in choirs, bands or other groups? If not, you’re going to have to build our base. Seek out voice lessons to develop all aspects of your singing.

Stay Consistent and Positive

Imagine how many people grow up wondering how to be a pop star. They constantly dream of becoming this beloved celebrity. But it rarely becomes a reality. The reason for this is that most people simply do not have the persistence and mindset to become a pop-star.
It is unlikely that the first time you seek something out whether it’s a concert gig or record deal, that you’re going to get a ‘yes’. You’re going to have to get used to getting denied and told ‘no’ if you want to succeed.
This, however, will take you far. If you’re willing to work hard and stay positive through the rejections you will face, you’re going to set yourself above the competition.

Develop Your Style

Being a pop star doesn’t require you to aver long blonde hair or six pack abs. In fact, pop stars are an eclectic bunch that come in all different varieties.
No person is going to be excluded from being a pop star because of how they were born. That said, people who are going to become pop stars must develop a look that gives them an edge and appeal over others. This means you should develop an edgy, trendy set, get a cool haircut, and carry yourself in a way that shows confidence. It is these characteristics that make a pop-star.

You are singer ? Songwriter ? Download 10 Free Pop instrumental Beats. Credits: Sony ATV, Universal Music, MTV, VH1..

Be Yourself

When people start getting their first taste of fame and status, they start to change who they are. They act differently to try and fit a certain mold. They get new friends to try and fit in with the right crowd, all because they think it’s how to become a pop star. But what ends up happening is that when these people don’t stay true to themselves they end up losing it all.
It’s important that, first and foremost, you remember why you wanted to become a pop star in the first place. Was it to find new friends and impress others? Probably not. It was most likely about making your dreams come true, about working hard and being an amazing singer, and bringing up your friends and family who helped you to get where you were before reaching fame and fortune.
If you move beyond your roots and stop being yourself, it’s a fast way to go downhill.

Put Yourself Out There

It’s easier than ever to get discovered by a music industry insider. Take Justin Bieber—he was discovered on YouTube. He got tons of hits for his incredible vocals and has become one of the most iconic singers of our generation.
If you’re wondering how to become a pop star, utilizing social media is a must. YouTube is a great place to start. The reason for this is that it is a video platform that will allow people to easily listen to your sound. Start a YouTube Channel and regularly add videos.
You can also use other social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. These sites will allow you to promote yourself and let people from all over the world discover your talent. It’s an absolute must in the 21st century.

Know the Right People

While social media will take you far, meeting people in real life is important as well. Many people who go on to become a pop star reside in major cities like New York, LA, or London. These are hubs of music, with producers, singers songwriters etc. all around. If you want to get to the top, you’ll need their help.
If you really want to become a pop star, then you should consider moving to one of these big cities. If that’s not in the picture, then contact local DJ’s, music producers, and other singers who can help you get ahead.

Conclusion

Although few people in this world will ever succeed in the music industry, it’s certainly possible. People around the world love music and someone is going to have to sing for them! Wondering how to become a pop star is not enough—you must take action! These steps will take you where you want to go, you just have to be willing to put in the work.

Pharrell Williams & Robin Thicke - "Blurred Lines" - Resume of Lawsuit

After ‘Blurred Lines’ was released in March of 2013, the track went on to garner incredible success all over the world. A few highlights of the song’s popularity are:

378 million views on YouTube,

#1 on the charts in 20 countries,

One of the best-selling singles of all time, and

Nominated for two Grammy’s

But the song’s success proved too good to be true.

Just recently on March 10th, 2015, Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were found guilty by a jury of the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles for copyright infringement. The trial which began in February of this year, ended when a decision came after a long legal battle between the songwriters and the family of Marvin Gaye, although the suit started in 2014.

The Origins of the Lawsuit

The Gaye estate, spearheaded by Marvin Gaye’s two children, originally sued Thicke and Williams because they believed that ‘Blurred Lines’ had clearly used elements from Marvin Gaye’s 1977 chart topping single ‘Got to Give it Up’.

The heirs to Gaye’s estate brought the lawsuit against the pop stars because they believed that when listening to the song, there are elements of ‘Blurred Lines’ that seem to overlap, especially in terms of the pop instrumental aspects. The latter refers to the fact that while none of the lyrics are identical, the rhythm, beat, and additional sound effects were found to have shared elements.

Blurred Lines & Song of Marvin Gaye mashup

The Verdict

After arguments were put forth by both sides, both Thicke and Williams (But not co-singer T.I. or the record company) were found guilty of copyright infringement after the jury found that ‘Blurred Lines’ had definitely used elements from the original Gaye track.

The jury awarded the Gaye family an astounding $7.4 million in damages for this infringement, although the family initially asked for $25 million; estimates show that the song netted around $17 million which is how the family justified their sum.

The Reaction

Much of the media, especially musicians, were shocked at the verdict and were quick to dismiss the jury’s ruling as unfounded. Although it was clear elements were taken from ‘Got to Give it Up’, musicians felt vulnerable because this ruling seems to have established a precedence going forward that even if a song is only remotely similar to a past song, the artists are liable for damages based on infringement.

The significant aspect of the ruling was that the jury found basis for copyright infringement solely because of the similarities in the pop instrumental aspects, but there was virtually no crossing over between the lyrics of the two songs; this is what is really troubling musicians.

What Will Happen Moving Forward

Both Mr. Thicke and Mr. Williams have vowed to appeal the verdict claiming that they have committed no wrongs. They will seek to be exonerated for any wrong doings and wish to continue to profit, as well as to continue promoting their work.

On the other side of the aisle, the Gaye estate has said that it intends to block any and all future sales of the ‘Blurred Lines’ single until the case has finally been put to rest.

History of Pharrell Williams

As a musician, Pharrell Williams did not solely facilitate amendment the face of pop throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. He conjointly was one among the faces of pop beats’ music -- as a magnetic star World Health Organization usually scarf the show once manufacturing and/or guesting on different artists' hit singles. Williams discharged his 1st solo single, "Frontin'." Created with Victor-Marie Hugo and that includes a guest verse from Jay-Z, the song engineered anticipation for The Neptunes gift... Clones, a compilation of all-new tracks from artists created by the pair.

"Frontin'" was a present summer hit and unbroken Williams' momentum running up to the discharge of Victor-Marie Hugo and Williams' second funk/rock-oriented N.E.R.D. album, discharged in March 2004. Send Your Music To Record Labels

You’ve spent countless hours perfecting your music and recording it. The next step is to distribute demos and get your music noticed on popular music blogs. Like many artists, you might not know the best way to start this process. This article will explain how to get your music out there so that labels can hear what you’re all about. You’ll find tons of advice on how to go from unheard to famous.

Build Some Buzz on Your Own

There are many tools available to artists to get some exposure, without the help of a record label. Get active with your own marketing to start building a fan base in the real world or on the Internet. For instance, enter some remix competitions, post your tracks on Soundcloud, and start compiling an email list at shows. Between making and recording music, you might not have so much time for marketing, but put a little effort into it and labels will recognize that people already like you.

Make the Best Music You Can

The sad truth is that the music industry is awash with artists who want to get a little recognition and “make it big.” Unfortunately, few of them are as good as they think they are. You can avoid this by making the best possible music. You can do this by practicing your instruments, practice playing as a band, take a little more time to perfect your songs, play more live shows, and get the best possible recording. Creating a good recording has never been easier so take the time to make it shine. After all, it’s going to represent you as you send your demo out.

Create a Press Kit

There are few rules for the contents of a press kit, but almost everybody agrees that you need to have one. Things to include: photos of all band members, biographical information about the band, any positive press you’ve received, and the dates of any upcoming shows. Don’t be afraid to get creative. Boring press kits are a dime a dozen, so put a little personality into yours to stand out from the crowd. Also, include some contact information. You want your fans to respond to you, so give them an opportunity to.

You are singer ? Songwriter ? Download 10 Free Pop instrumental Beats. Credits: Sony ATV, Universal Music, MTV, VH1..

Make a Demo CD

Blogs, radio stations, and labels get many releases every day. Some are never heard. Some are only given a cursory listen. You want to up your chances of getting reviewed. So make a professional package of a normal jewel case with the best artwork you can afford. And then choose 4 of your best songs to send or even less. Reviewers don’t have time to wade through your entire album so make things easy on them. Just give them the best songs you have. Get a professional pressing of your CD, including graphics and text on the CD itself.

Do Your Research

One of the biggest reasons that demos are never heard is because artists ignore the submission guidelines of labels and blogs. They will toss your submission aside right away if you don’t follow the rules, so make sure to find out exactly what they want. Then compile a list of places that you plan on submitting your music too. Adhere to their guidelines precisely and you just might have a chance of getting heard. Also, address your submission to the correct person at the label or blog to expedite the process.

Send Your Music and Take a Break

Once you’ve sent out hundreds of physical demos and digital files, don’t expect an immediate response. Your earliest response probably won’t come for at least two weeks and maybe longer. So, get back to practicing, play some shows, do more recording, or just take a vacation. Following up won’t yield any results right away, so forget about it for a little while.

Follow Up

After a few weeks, feel free to send out emails and make phone calls to follow up on submissions. A few questions to ask:

Did you receive my release and have you had a chance to review it?

What did you think?

Is there any chance you are interested in hearing more?

The easiest way to mess this process up is to appear needy. Don’t waste people’s time and don’t come across as desperate. A quick phone call is all that you need. Hopefully, you find somebody that really connected with your music. If you don’t..

Don’t Take It Personally!

There is a lot of music out there and it might take some persistence to get it noticed. Some artists struggle for years in obscurity. Maybe you need to sharpen your musical skills. Maybe you just didn’t find a receptive audience and you need to send your demo to other labels. At any rate, don’t take non-response or negative feedback personally. Just think of it as absence of positive feedback and keep making the music you love.

© Copyright - All rights reserved - Any reproduction or duplication prohibited.

How To Be Good At Singing - 10 Tips

Many people listen to popular singers on the radio and doubt that they could ever sound like that. While many professional singers start with some amount of talent, it takes a lot of practice to achieve great singing. Even the best singers spend a good deal of time developing their voices. The good news is that you can do the same! You might never be the best singer in the world, but you can improve significantly. There are some very easy things you can do to improve your singing. We’ve assembled 10 tips to help you become a better singer !

1. Stand Up

One of the mistakes that beginners and novices make begins when they think of singing as just coming from the mouth. Singing from your mouth alone is guaranteed to make a weak and thin sound. The best way to engage your entire body is to practice singing while standing. You can use the muscles of your stomach and chest more efficiently this way.

2. Focus On Posture

Now that you’re standing, you can start adopting the correct posture. Bend your knees a little, let your arms hang loosely at your sides, hold your head up but let your jaw drop slightly and start taking deep breaths. If you feel tightness anywhere between your feet and your mouth, keep breathing and let it relax. Any stress in your body will translate to the sound of your voice, so get limber and loose before you start singing.

3. Warm Up

The familiar “do-re-mi” exercises, starting at the middle of your range, are a good way to gently get your voice ready to really sing. Don’t start singing loud until you’ve warmed up at moderate volumes in all parts of your range. This can be done as fast as five minutes, or longer if you want. The more you warm up your voice before you really go for it, the better the results will be.

4. Do Drills

There are quite a few drills that will help you with pitch and posture. One of them is to create a buzz with your lips and “sing” at different pitches with it. This helps you use your chest and your throat together and harness the power of both of them together. Check out more advanced drills on the Internet to help you expand your range and power.

You are singer ? Songwriter ? Download 10 Free Pop instrumental Beats. Credits: Sony ATV, Universal Music, MTV, VH1..

5. Use a Keyboard

You don’t have to use a keyboard, but singing along with an instrument will help you to stay in tune with your voice. Without it, you’re not training your ears. It’s very easy to sing out of tune, and developing a sense of tune and pitch is important to being a better singer.

6. Don’t Force It

The easiest way to hurt your voice is to force it to do something it’s not ready for. If you find a note you can’t reach when you’re practicing, stop. Relax. Try again. If you still can’t get it, move on to something else. You can try another day. Your voice will improve over a long period of time, so don’t expect results immediately. With diligence, you can reach those difficult notes.

7. Practice Consistently

Like any musical instrument, you need to practice regularly. A small amount every day is enough to see good results. Make sure that this time is focused, with very specific objectives. Maybe this week you want to sing two notes higher. Practice that, along with your regular practice regime for 15 minutes every day and you’ll be amazed at your success.

8. Take Care of Your Voice!

Don’t expect good things from your voice without taking care of it. You can sound amazing at guitar when you’re sick, but the same is not true of singing. Your overall health has a huge impact on the quality of your voice. Keep yourself healthy with exercise and diet, and take extra steps to keep your voice extra-healthy. Drink plenty of water and don’t smoke to start keeping your voice healthy. Some singers notice that their diet changes the quality of their voice. For instance, dairy products are thought to encourage music production and compromise the voice.

9. Sing With Others

Find other people to sing with and trade tips with them. You can harmonize with one another and practice together. That makes practice more fun and often more effective. Having someone to bounce ideas off is always helpful and singing buddies can help you reach new levels.

10. Voice Coaching Can Help You

A voice coach can work with you regularly to improve the quality of your voice and identify areas that you need extra help with. It might seem like a waste of time, but a voice coach can really help you reach your full potential.

As always, make sure that you’re having fun while you’re singing. Once singing becomes a chore, you’re guaranteed to get worse or give up. Use your practice sessions to try new things and experience the joy of singing, not just engage in technical exercises. Song frequently and sing freely!

SIMILAR ARTICLE:

How To Become a Famous Singer ?

© Copyright - All rights reserved - Any reproduction or duplication prohibited.

How to Increase Your Creativity for Songwriting – 10 Tips

Do you dream of writing incredible, moving songs that reach the hearts of millions of listeners? Songwriters are not born overnight; it takes years of practice and persistence to perfect your songwriting abilities and a little advice will help you get the most out of your songwriting efforts. Here are some tips that can help you develop your creativity and improve your songwriting.

1. Write about Your Passions

The best songs come from a place of personal passion and experience. Write about the things that you understand and that are important to you. The emotion that comes from personal experience will shine through the layers of your song.

2. Create an Emotional Impact

When you are writing, find a way to amplify and home in on your emotions. This process works differently for everybody. Listen to a song or poem that inspires you before you start with your own process. Meditate on the experiences in your life to really feel your emotions before you put pen to paper

3. Create a Lifestyle that Provides Inspiration

Of course, you will have a hard time generating an emotional connection with your music if you are not a passionate individual. If you have a boring, dull life, change that before you try to change your songwriting. Once you have an exciting, dynamic life, you will find that inspiration comes on its own quite naturally.

4. Get Out and Live Your Life

How do you create a dynamic life? Leave your house! Most good songwriters frequently get out in the world to experience what it has to offer. Living a full and balanced life involves much more than sitting in your room, waiting for inspiration. As you live a varied life, you will gather material to put into your music.

5. Practice Every Day

If you want to improve your songwriting, practice regularly. Even if you only do it for 15 minutes a day, spend some time working on songs frequently and you’ll see dramatic improvements in a short amount of time.

You are singer ? Songwriter ? Download 10 Free Pop instrumental Beats. Credits: Sony ATV, Universal Music, MTV, VH1..

6. Pool Your Resources

If you can find songwriting partners, you will find the process much more rewarding. Songwriting teams help each other develop ideas faster and provide mutual inspiration. Even if you do not work with other songwriters, just get out and jam with other musicians to keep your musical muscles toned and come up with new song ideas.

7. Take Notes

Keep a notebook with you to record bits of inspiration or random phrases that come to mind. You can find small notebooks that just slip into your pocket and can go everywhere with you. Then, when you sit down to write songs, you have a wealth of material at your fingertips.

8. Simple Can Be Better

Don’t get caught up in thinking that you need to write masterpieces. Popular songs are often very simple, with just a handful of chords and a few verses and choruses. If it feels good, then it is good. Do not push yourself to write a more complex song when the simple one you have is already perfect.

9. Don’t Obsess About Quality

When you start writing a song, do not worry about quality. Just put the pieces of the song together. Worrying about the opinions of others and the quality of a song is a good way to get stalled in the process. It is far more important to focus on the process of writing. Later, do some quality control and complete the best songs in your repertoire. Do not be afraid to write hundreds of songs and then let a handful of them see the light of day.

10. Shut Out the World

When you are writing songs, that is all you should be doing. Turn off the phone and the TV. Disconnect the Internet. Set aside a specific period of time to just work on songs and nothing else. You’ll notice your creativity and effectiveness increase as a result.

As you follow these tips, make sure that you never lose sight of having fun. No matter what kind of music you are writing, an attitude of fun and enjoyment will create the best results in your writing process. Good luck!

MORE ARTICLE:

How To Become a Famous Singer ?

10 Tips to Becoming a Better Singer

How Mixing Your Vocals With Garageband

Now that you’ve recorded the vocals for your song, are you a little surprised at how poor they sound?

Most music production with voices relies on a good deal of processing to achieve the sound that we are accustomed to hearing in professional recordings. It takes years to cultivate these techniques and use them well, but the steps are quite easy to learn. Here are a few steps to mixing vocals in Garageband that any beginner can follow.

1. De-Essing the Vocals

A de-esser is a processor that takes away the harsh sibilance of the letter S. You’ve probably noticed that it’s quite a bit louder than other vocal sounds. This has to do with the way the human voice creates the S.

Garaband doesn’t have a dedicated de-esser, but you can download one. When you apply the de-esser, you need to use the different monitor modes on it to zero in on the S, which sits around a specific frequency. Monitor the vocals so you only hear the de-esser working, and adjust the frequency of the detector and suppressor until you hear mostly S’s coming through. Then switch back to monitoring the de-essed track and play around with the ratio of the de-esser so that it doesn’t create an unnatural sound.

2. Compression

De-essers are compressors that target a very specific sound. Compressors work on all the sounds in the signal by reducing the dynamic range of the signal. The human voice oscillates between quiet and loud syllables rapidly, making it sometimes difficult to hear, and sometimes overwhelming. Compressors even out the differences.

There are a few different parameters to understand first:

Ratio – Determines how much the signal is compressed. It is often expressed as 3:1 or 4:1 and means that every 3 decibels are compressed to a single decibel, for example. Higher ratios “squash” signals and you’ll probably want to keep your ratios under 5:1 or so, as you start using compression.

Threshold - Defines the level at which compression begins. Setting the threshold at -10 decibels means that the signal is only compressed above that level. You need to experiment with this so that your signal is only occasionally going above the threshold. It can kiss the threshold on every word, but if you drop the threshold so that the compressor is always on, the signal begins to sound a little strange.

Attack – Defines how fast the compressor works. Setting the attack to 10 milliseconds means that the compressor starts working ten thousandths of a second after the threshold is crossed. For vocals, you can use very fast attack times, about 2 or 3 milliseconds, since syllables are so quick.

Release – This controls how long it takes for the compressor to stop working, after the signal drifts below the threshold. Long release times are perfect for vocals and tend to smooth out levels. Try release times between 200 to 300 milliseconds to start.

Every voice is different, and every style demands a different approach with the compressor, so start with these suggestions and augment them while you listen to the signal. Using compressors well takes quite some time to master so don’t be discouraged by initial, unsatisfactory attempts

You are singer ? Songwriter ? Download 10 Free Pop instrumental Beats. Credits: Sony ATV, Universal Music, MTV, VH1..

3. Equalization

Equalization is a way of increasing or decreasing the level of different frequencies of a signal, much like the bass and treble knob of your stereo. EQ helps to differentiate sounds with similar frequencies.

First, subtract before adding. Our ears notice when you boost EQ but subtractive EQ is much less noticeable. That also means you should make your boosts very subtle, no more than 5 dB, while you can cut quite drastically.

Every voice has different requirements, and you need to tinker around to find what works best for your voice, but here are some recommendations.

Cut out all the frequencies below 100 Hz. They’re not contributing to the performance, and usually contain rumbles and odd sounds that cloud the rest of the recording.

Gently boost the frequencies above 10 kHz for male voices. Be wary about boosting female voices similarly.

Almost every voice has some annoying frequencies around 5kHz which should be removed. Boost a wedge of EQ and slide it around that region to accentuate that frequency, which often has a nasal sound. When you find it, go ahead and cut it out.

4. Reverb

Reverb is a way of adding an element of space to your recording. It also adds an element of thickness, when applied correctly. Not all vocals need reverb, and in some genres, like hip-hop, it is rarely used on lead vocals.

Apply a reverb patch to the vocals and choose a reverb setting you like. Turn the reverb all the way down and listen to the song. Gradually turn the reverb up until you notice it in the mix. That’s a good level for the reverb, unless you are looking for an effected vocal sound, like Enya, which requires much higher amounts of reverb.

5. Sound Better?

Hopefully, your vocals sound much more professional after following these steps. Mixing engineers often apply many more advanced techniques and use series of these effects to achieve a pro sound. These techniques are the basics of all that professional engineers do, and are a solid foundation for you to explore with.

MORE ARTICLE:

10 Tips to Becoming a Better Singer

How To Become a Famous Singer ?

How the Top Ten Pop Artists of the 2000’s Defined the Decade

The 2000s represent a decisive turning point in pop music. The last vestiges of the 1990s ran their course and gave way to a new wave of pop music. Running parallel to changes in pop music were the undeniable effects of changing social media and communication technology, which rocked the music industry and allowed artists to control their own destiny. These artists are some of the last greats to ride the coattails of the traditional music industry.

Let’s take a look at the top ten pop artists of the 2000’s, and how they changed the face of pop music.

10. Jay-Z

Jay-Z has been a dominant force in hip-hop since the early 1990s. Through his collaborations with other musicians and his own albums, he was involved in 14 songs that charted in the Billboard Top 100. It wasn’t until the end of the decade that one of his own songs, “Empire State of Mind,” hit number one on the charts. His commitment to cross genre collaboration has expanded the reach of hip-hop, making it a truly universal art form.

9. Amy Winehouse

Even after her death, the influence of Amy Winehouse is strong. With the help of Daptone Records, Winehouse revived the classic sound of 1960’s soul and brought it to the mainstream. While throwbacks are nothing new, Winehouse made a classic sound popular again, and paved the way for other artists to embrace and exploit the sounds of the past while staying current. Check out “Rehab” and “Back to Black” for the powerful vocals and Motown sound that made her famous.

8. Coldplay

Coldplay has sold over 50 million albums, making them an unstoppable force in pop music. They proved that heartfelt pop music could be fun, serious, and a little adventurous all at the same time. They’ve managed to explore new musical territory without abandoning the original style that brought them to fame. Many of the indie artists who are achieving success in this decade owe much to the lyricism and solid songwriting that made Coldplay stadium giants.

7. Beyonce

Nobody would have suspected that abandoning Destiny’s Child, one of the most successful pop groups of the 1990’s, would be one of the best moves that Beyonce made. Since then, she expanded on the Destiny’s Child message of empowerment for women and made it all her own. She’s become a household name and helped young ladies hold their heads high in the pop music world. Her marriage to Jay-Z seems almost inevitable, since both are business savvy pop powerhouses, and it only bolstered her career.

6. Justin Timberlake

Like Beyonce, JT broke away from N’Sync, another amazingly successful group from the 1990’s, only to achieve greater notoriety on his own. Though he only released one album in the 2000’s, Futuresexx/Lovesounds, that record was a defining moment for pop music of any decade. It catapulted JT to worldwide fame and established his dominance as a master of R&B. It’s hard to imagine pop music without his influence, which seamlessly assimilated the sounds of the 1970’s through the 2000’s and showed just how funky a white guy can be.

5. Green Day

Green Day has their roots in pop-punk, which they dominated in the 1990’s. They took that fame and vision to a whole new level with a one-two hit of rock operas: first, American Idiot, followed by 21st Century Breakdown. Both illuminated the decadence of American culture, with catchy hooks and subversive lyrics. They simultaneously affirmed pop artists as cultural critics and sold out stadiums around the world. Decrying the state of the world has never been so fashionable and rocking.

4. Lady Gaga

In the spirit of Alice Cooper and Madonna, Lady Gaga used immensely catchy songs to push the buttons of the musical elite and critics alike. Her sense of style combined with musical ability made her an agent provocateur in the music world, while garnering her millions of followers. The sensationalism of her image and personality is no new trick in the pop world, but she came along at just the right time to show us how stuffy and orthodox our tastes could be. All to driving beats and unforgettable lyrics.

3. Kelly Clarkson

No Top Ten of the 2000’s would be complete without an American Idol contestant. The show brought pop music back into our TVs and made us believe in a pop star, before they even got their sea legs. Clarkson showed that the faith of viewers wasn’t misplaced. She has continued to deliver pop hits and has become a force in her own right, something that few people suspected American Idol could do.

2. Alicia Keys

The maturity and talent of Alicia Keys have made her a perennial favorite of the adult contemporary crowd. Her music isn’t rooted in pop tradition, instead drawing on jazz and easy listening to showcase her piano talent, a singular voice, and amazing songwriting. In pop music, it’s easy to get lost in the bright lights and fads, but Keys brings a timeless sensibility to the table that will far outlast that decade and this one.

1. Eminem

Few would deny the impact of Eminem. His rags-to-riches story touches everyone who wants to overcome their situation and become something greater. His acidic tongue and clever rhymes helped him deliver messages that both scathed and soothed. Self disclosure rarely carries artists far, especially when they are as graphic as Eminem’s. He managed to take his dirty laundry and make hits out of it, even despite the bad press he received for his personal and professional life. Modern hip hop owes a great deal to Eminem, who showed artists just how genuine they could be.

While the 2000’s fade deeper into our memories, the legacy of these artists will persist for decades. All these artists contributed to what will be remembered as the sound of the 2000’s. As we leave those years behind, and embark upon a new era of music that is defined by Facebook, Kickstarter, and home studios, the echoes of these artists will be felt in a new batch of stars that find their fan base without the help of the music industrial complex. Given the rapid changes in music and how we listen to it, the artists on this list will one day be viewed as living at the end of an era, and the dawning of the new.
